One size fits all

Not long ago I wrote about our politicians changing parties and allegiance. We have a fresh new example of this interchangebility. In another life our Qébec Liberal Premier was a progressive Conservative minister in Brian Mulroney's government, at one point he was even a canditate to succeed Brian. He lost the leadership race and reappeared as a saviour for the then embattled Québec Liberals. As such he has won three straight mandates (majority/minority/majority).
Lately we have learned that he will be co-presiding over a celebration of Mulroney's political accomplishments. We all know that Mulroney is now persona non grata for Mr Harper who has forbidden his ministers from having any but private relations with Brian because the Schreiber affair.
Harpoon himself is having his very own problems with the progressive wing of his party and could be in for a rough time should he lose the next election or even stay in minority territory. Could Charest be positioning himself for another "saviour" operation only this time with the Federal conservatives? No Québec Premier, since Maurice Duplessis has ever won a fourth mandate.
As they say on TV: "Watch the next episode.

  1. I must say, Thank you, for your comment on Abe Lincoln Blogs about your version of Universal Health Care back in the days when you were growing up. We never had much more than Castor Oil but my dad made a salve for everything out of camphor and turpentine and maybe something else that I don't remember. I know he smelled like turpentine when he used it.

I am ignorant of politics outside of this country. My apologies for not knowing more than I do about your country. I have had my mind filled with the likes of our George W. Bush and his brains in Karl Rove for a long time. My knees are sore from praying that he get out of the Whine House. And I woke up one morning and he was gone. I have high hopes for Obama.

  3. Jean Charest est «un homme tres interessant.» One hardly knows what to expect from such an interesting man.

Back to the federal Conservatives? That strikes me as more than a bit of a stretch. My inclination is to think that he'll do a Frank McKenna -- that his next move will be out of politics and into some serious money in the "private sector."

    But, really, who knows?

  4. As you say Charest is hard to predict. However it is commonly known, sown here, that our Jean's dearest dream was, and could still be, to become Prime minister of Canada. When he co-founded the Council of the Federation he had it in mind and I don't think he has abandonned the idea.
But you could be right about the McKenna thing.
