Orchid's progess

Thought you would be interested by our winter garden's progress.  Two more buttons seem to be ready to bloom.

  1. This echoes a famous moment that I like very much in War and Peace, when Andrei Bolkonsky sees an old oak tree that is coming to life in spring. And he thinks that he may have some life left in him too.

"Buttons" you say. :) I would have said "buds." Is "boutons," then, in French, both button and bud? That's good.

  2. You are right, I should have written "buds" but buds also mean, in French, "bourgeons" for trees and shrubs. "Bouton" is for flowers; I always say that being bilingual is to speak and write inadequetely in two languages.

  3. Fun to watch and anticipate. They keep us looking forward to spring, don't they?

  4. They sure do, besides we have been having very mild weather lately, well above seasonal normals.

  5. C'est très bien. Will they "migrate" outside when the weather is nicer?

  6. I don't think so Rob. The orchid and the violets are fragile and do not like our local insects. They will remain on the window sill.

  9. I don't know Amanda. However lots of music can be heard in this house.
As for the Sound of Music, we do like the Trapps very much, the real ones, and we still have two LPs of them that we play once in a while and the «real» book by the Baroness written a long time ago.
Hollywood did change the story and some of the children were rather unhappy about it since they liked Franz very much and he was made out, in the film, to be a traitor that he was not. The telegraph employee boy friend never was either...but it made for more tension and was good at the box office.

  10. I remember that Christopher Plummer thought the final script was a dog's dinner, and that he referred to the entire thing as "The Sound of Mucus." Still, he got in front of the camera; it's a buck.

  12. I don't know why Flavia and I (Flavia surtout) have problems with orchids. They are weird flowers.

  13. We don't know why this one blooms in our house after six months of doing nothing. Orchids are, indeed, weird.
