But, in real life I had some opportunities to find out that a secret ballot will, at times, break a logjam when special interest groups are involved. Secrecy brings confidence and people will vote differently if shielded from possible reprisals or consequences. Sad but true.
In the case above, who can tell who voted how?potsochttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09497735324298117643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699772873889750632.post-88142727340706235172010-02-19T19:35:43.572-05:002010-02-19T19:35:43.572-05:00Satire politique. Most priests, the few left, cover several parrishes and services are held on a rotating basis or the priest travels from one congregation to another for one mass on Sundays or Saturdays. One priest may cover as many as 8 congregations outside large towns.
The Italian community has remained closer to their churches but, while they worship, it seems to have little impact in their day to day lives, it is a Sunday thing period. probably as in the old country.potsochttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09497735324298117643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699772873889750632.post-15862199678029938842010-02-18T12:18:20.109-05:002010-02-18T12:18:20.109-05:00Mairesse as the wife of the mayor, I had understoo...Mairesse as the wife of the mayor, I had understood, and it as a poor joke. That the doyen is the oldest citizen, this how could I know. So on the whole I gave too importance to the eglise factor. You certainly are a different people from us. Your churches are deserted and yet ... but I can be wrong again, while here, les eglises, il y a de gens mais religion is not taken that seriously.Man of Romahttp://manofroma.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699772873889750632.post-61283669861703335042010-02-18T07:58:07.499-05:002010-02-18T07:58:07.499-05:00"Mairesse: the wife of the mayor or the woman..."Mairesse: the wife of the mayor or the woman elected to that office". In some where the town hall is too small to house public meetings those are held in the community hall and services are held there as well. Usually the altar is behind a movable wall.
"Le doyen" over here is not the parrish priest it is the oldest citizen of the village; I would have written "le curé" had the parrish priest been involved.
As for moderation it was the only way I found to eliminate the conversation you had asked me to eradicate about the bears. One advantage of it is that I am immediately warned when a comment is posted so I can react faster...considering time zones...of course. And yes "à moqueur, moquer est de mise".
Ciaopotsochttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09497735324298117643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699772873889750632.post-50499699423810345492010-02-18T02:14:51.179-05:002010-02-18T02:14:51.179-05:00Very well written, with attention to story-telling...Very well written, with attention to story-telling details and humour, such as:

Il s’était procuré un beau stylo tout neuf ….
Mme Labine était pesante, à plus d’un titre ….
par la porte arrière de la salle paroissiale, le conseil entra comme en procession (do they have meetings like that in the Parrocchia ? Of course, vraisemblable, in such a small village)…
Devant la sagesse, la profondeur de ces remarques et le respect dû au doyen de la paroisse (mocking I imagine, but possibly depicting as well the authority of a small village local priest, exactly like here).
Mairesse sounds odd to me, similar to maitresse.

The final special effect, always good in a story : À leur immense surprise ... le fils du buandier chinois du village.

You made me take a mind trip, which is the purpose of story-telling. And - that's me - I enjoyed the local French slang quite a lot, which adds truth btw.

On another note, it could NOT go without notice that la modération de commentaires n'a commencée qu’après mes histoires sur les ours …. ;-)

A moquer doit aussi être un peu moqué , don't you think? :-) :-) ;-)Man of Romahttp://manofroma.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699772873889750632.post-59905489909990462062010-02-11T21:45:54.393-05:002010-02-11T21:45:54.393-05:00Glad it did the job or at least part of it.Glad it did the job or at least part of it.potsochttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09497735324298117643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699772873889750632.post-29984087393329690362010-02-11T21:25:10.895-05:002010-02-11T21:25:10.895-05:00Yes, ethical laws are there for a good reason.
